First off, I’m not much into sabermetrics. Not that I disagree with it. It actually makes a lot of sense. It’s that I grew up on HRs/RBIs/Batting Average. That was it. It was a much more simple time. It meshed well with being a kid.
Growing up my favorite player was Alan Trammell. Here are his career stats:
Batting Average: .285
Home Runs: 185
They are respectable numbers. No doubt. I never thought there would be serious consideration for him to be in the Hall of Fame. Since I am completely biased I always hoped that he would be inducted. Strangely enough though, sabermetrics has brought his numbers and his defensive play back to life. Perhaps there is still hope for Tramm to make the Hall of Fame.
Trammell’s 70.3 career WAR would tie for the sixth-most among Hall of Fame shortstops, behind Honus Wagner, Cal Ripken Jr., Ozzie Smith, Luke Appling, and Arky Vaughan, and tied with Barry Larkin.
Whoa. Did you read those names? Each one of those baseball players has been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
One of my other favorite players of the same generation of Tigers, Lou Whitaker, is currently ineligible for Hall of Fame induction because in his first year on the ballot he received minimal support.
According to Baseball Reference, Whitaker’s career 74.8 WAR would be the fifth-highest among Hall of Fame second basemen (min. 75% games at 2B), behind Eddie Collins, Joe Morgan, Nap Lajoie, and Charlie Gehringer.
I guess I better study up, starting with reading more Bill James.

Is it possible to run/jog regularly and still be out of shape?
Last week I decided to start incorporating other forms of cardio besides running. I settled on the N+TC app. I told my niece and my wife, jokingly, that I was going to end up with a feminine physique since the app targets women. I thought I was somewhat in shape but after the initial workout (45 minutes) which left me huffing and puffing and sore for a few days after, I’ve realized I am nowhere close to being in shape. I I honestly don’t care who Nike is targeting with this app, I need this type of instruction. I mean, I don’t remember the last time I’ve been sore in so many different areas.
I recommend it.
When Jim Leyland stepped down as manager of the Detroit Tigers I have to admit I was bummed out. Leyland grew on me. He was like the grandfather that I had for moments here and there. Gruñón. Now that he’s no longer the skipper, the nostalgia kicks in. It’s no longer 2006. Seven years have passed. Perhaps, the feelings of nostalgia are also there because it’s been a year that my grandfather passed away. Although I hate to admit it, I do miss him.
With the arrival of Abbey we’ve been holed up in the house, so it was definitly time to bring SJ back. It had been nearly six months since we had brought SJ for the first time. What a difference a few months make.
The Chaffee Zoo is a great place to visit in the valley. It’s not huge, but that’s what makes it special and one of the reasons we keep on coming back. The staff is welcoming and they do a great job with the upkeep of the zoo.
This time around the ooh and ahhs were great to hear. For a while now she’s been identifying animals by the sounds they make. Yesterday, she was calling them by name! Yea!
I can’t wait till Abbey is old enough to enjoy it as much as SJ. Well,…maybe I won’t hope speeding up time. It’s going by really fast as it is and there’s not much one can do to slow it down.
